ELICOS Market Analysis: January 2022

ELICOS commencements fall by 41.7% January 2022 YTD
National ELICOS commencements for YTD January 2022 decreased by 41.7%, or 1,667 fewer students compared to YTD January 2021. For enrolments, the figure decreased 52.1%, or 8,910 fewer students.      

Market performance highlights:

January 2022 YTD commencements from China declined by 52.8%.

YTD January commencements also fell for Brazil (down 66%), Japan (down 28.6%), South Korea (down 46.4%), Taiwan (down 33.3%), and India (down 25.5%).

Commencements increased for Thailand (up 45.5%), and Vietnam (up 3%). 

Independent ELICOS-only visa lodgements up by almost 2,000 applications
The figures for Independent ELICOS visa applications lodged in January 2022 again provide a good reason for optimism. With 2,392 applications lodged, January 2022 was up by 1,967 applications, or 462.82%, compared with January 2021.  

Independent ELICOS sector grants 
The Independent ELICOS sector visa grant figures for the month of January 2022 were up by 283.29%, or 983 more visa grants, compared to January 2021. This is the biggest increase we have seen since March 2020. Note that January 2021 was down by 90.33% when compared with January 2020. 

The biggest increase in ELICOS only visa grants for January 2022 was for students from Thailand, which was up 1,516% year on year. ELICOS only visas granted for students from China were up 62.5% in January 2022 compared with January 2021, and South Korean students were up by 50%. ELICOS only visa grants for students from Brazil were up by 650% in January 2022 compared to January 2021.
