Australian English Language Training (ELT) Barometer 2022

21 April 2022 Advocacy
Australian English Language Training (ELT) Barometer 2022

invite you to participate in the next wave of the Australian English Language Training (ELT) Barometer, to be conducted between May and August 2022.

English Australia has been selected to manage a project on behalf of the Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) to undertake a survey of international students studying English language with Australian ELT providers, and have successfully advocated for our members to participate free of charge. Register now.

This research will provide information about international students and their experience of studying at Australian ELT providers in the current COVID impacted environment, including where relevant their experience of remote learning.

Participating institutions will have the option to survey onshore as well as offshore cohorts – campus locations onshore and offshore can be separately registered to participate via the same registration link (each location must be separately registered). This reduces the requirement for separate survey processes, and survey routing and filtering will ensure students answer only those questions relevant to their location.

Understanding the ELT student experience will assist providers to further develop expertise in providing English language training in modes of study that will be central to their future success in attracting, teaching and supporting international students. Listening to international students and subsequently making changes based on evidence gathered through research is fundamental to the future success of Australia’s ELT sector.

Key benefits to participating provider colleges:

  • an independent research instrument for regular monitoring and evaluation of the student experience within the college
  • a snapshot of areas of strength and weakness within the college to inform policy and practice
  • valuable marketing intelligence on aspects of the decision-making process of current students to inform marketing strategies and remain competitive
  • encouragement to think outside the current environment, measuring your college against others in the sector and providing a channel for the sharing of best practice on common issues.

At a sector-wide level, previous ELT Barometer surveys have provided valuable data used in promotional and advocacy work in addition to extensive focus on improving the student experience and Australia’s competitive advantage.

The ELB is an independent and confidential feedback process coordinated by English Australia and open to all CRICOS registered ELICOS providers, both members and non-members of English Australia. As with past ELT Barometer surveys, the 2022 survey process will be administered by i-graduate.

Colleges will be required to:

  • liaise with survey organisers at i-graduate
  • notify students about the study, and the dates the survey runs
  • assist students to complete the survey by providing facilities (for English language students we recommend incorporation of the survey into a planned lesson in a computer room where students have internet access)
  • use the available data to improve, monitor or maintain aspects of institutional performance.

Participating colleges receive the following core deliverables on completion of the ELB project:

  • overview of national results from the 2022 Australian ELB survey, presented in PowerPoint format, which will include comparative analysis with the results from previous ELB surveys
  • two-page document describing key findings and conclusions from the 2022 Australian ELB
  • summary of individual college performance satisfaction scores for each questionnaire element compared with the Australian ELB index (provision dependent on minimum of 30 responses per institution).

This is another significant English Australia initiative with substantial funding support from the Australian government. We look forward to your participation in this important project for the English language teaching sector, which has the potential to make a significant contribution to the ongoing success of your college.
