National ELICOS commencements for YTD April 2022 were on the way up with the first increase in over 2 years led by growth from Thailand
National ELICOS commencements for YTD April 2022 increased by 4.4% or 576 additional students compared to YTD April 2021. Thailand is now the top source country for ELICOS students in Australia.
Market highlights
- ELICOS only lodgements were almost fourteen times higher YTD.
- NSW was back to 2019 lodgement levels, while Victoria and Queensland have significantly increased numbers and beaten their previous lodgement records.
- Excitingly, it seems that we are back to 2014-2015 levels for ELICOS only Visa grants.
- For enrolments, the figure decreased by 25.3% or 6,596 fewer students.
- Thailand commencements increased by 374% with 1,684 more students than this time last year.
- Commencements from China decreased by 40.9% or 1,404 fewer students versus YTD April 2021. Chinese students made up 14.9% of commencements within ELICOS.
- Commencements from Colombia decreased by 29.3% or 478 fewer students, commencements from Brazil increased by 44.4% or 395 additional students.
- YTD April commencements were also down for India (26.6%), South Korea (27.1%) and Taiwan (21.6%).
ELICOS only grants over five times higher
The Independent ELICOS sector grants were up again, and over five times higher in April 2022 compared with April 2021, with 1,807 total ELICOS only visas granted for the month.
Offshore grants for Independent ELICOS were up by 1,711 in April 2022, or over 47 times higher, compared to April 2021.

Lodgements have risen considerably, with ELICOS only visa lodgements in April 2022 almost fourteen times higher than in April 2021, with 4,596 total lodgements.
