National ELICOS commencements for YTD August 2022 increased by 73.3% versus August 2021. Enrolments increased by 24.7%.

ELICOS only visa lodgements remain high, with seventeen times more lodgements made in August 2022 YTD (4,816 total lodgements).
Commencements from China decreased by 8.9% or 513 fewer students versus YTD August 2021. Chinese students made up 14.1% of commencements within ELICOS.
Commencements from Colombia increased by 87.9% or 2,301 additional students, and commencements from Brazil increased by 247.5% or 3,425 additional students.
YTD August commencements were also down for South Korea (by 3%) and Taiwan (by 4.6%).
ELICOS only grants almost fifty-four times higher
The Independent ELICOS sector grants were almost fifty-four times higher in August 2022 compared with August 2021, with 8,466 more ELICOS-only visas granted.
Offshore grants for Independent ELICOS were up by 8,504 in August 2022, or almost 257 times higher, compared to August 2021. Onshore grants for Independent ELICOS were down by 30.65%, with 38 fewer grants.
ELICOS only visas granted to citizens from Colombia were up over 448 times higher in August 2022 compared to August 2021, with 2,692 more grants. Brazil was up over 95 times higher year on year with 1,144 more grants, while grants to citizens from Chile were 68 times higher or 681 more grants, and grants were almost eleven times higher for Chinese citizens. Visas granted to ELICOS students from Thailand were almost sixty-one times higher for the same comparison period.

Top Nationalities Granted and Lodged
The top source country for ELICOS only lodgements is still Colombia, with 1,3451 lodgements made in August 2022. The top source country for grants in August 2022 is Columbia again, with 2,698 applications granted.
The top three nationalities for access granted are Colombia, Thailand, and Brazil, with a combined total of 5,585 visas granted in August 2022. The top three nationalities for visas lodged are also Colombia, Thailand, and Brazil, with a combined total of 3,054 visas lodged in August 2022.
However, grant rates in August 2022 for Thailand were only 69.8%, indicating that the Thailand figures should be even higher. Grant rates for other top source countries were at 98.8% or higher.
