ELICOS Market Analysis: December 2022

The full year (YTD December 2022) ELICOS commencements highlights the strong sector recovery with growth of 155.4% versus full year December 2021. Enrolments increased by 89.6%, which was the highest level of growth of any education sector in Australia.

Market highlights

  • The ELICOS sector had the highest volume increase in commencements of any sector in 2022. Up 44,680 commencements. The Higher Education was the 2nd highest increasing by 41,026 commencements. 
  • The total number of commencements for the year (2022) was 63% back on 2019 numbers.
  • Commencements from Colombia increased by 286.5% or 9,414 additional students, commencements from Brazil increased by 419.3% or 7,270 additional students.
  • Spain continues to increase commencements, with a YTD increase of 724.4% in December.  
  • Commencements from China increased by 15.5% or 1,290 additional students versus YTD December 2021. Chinese students made up 13.1% of commencements within ELICOS.
  • ELICOS lodgements in 2022 over nine times higher than 2021 and highest recorded, at 56,492, which is a positive sign for 2023. 

Visa trends:

ELICOS only grants over 13.5 times higher Year on Year

The Independent ELICOS sector grants were over 13.5 times higher in 2022 year on year, with 45,323 more grants. 
 
Offshore grants for Independent ELICOS were over thirty-one times higher in 2022, with 43,756 more total annual grants, compared to 2021. Onshore grants for Independent ELICOS were up by over 80%, with 1,567 more grants.  

ELICOS only lodgements reach all-time high

ELICOS only visa lodgements were over nine times higher in 2022 than in 2021, with 56,492, which is the highest annual lodgements recorded.
