ELICOS Market Analysis: January 2023

YTD January ELICOS commencements increased by 358.2% versus January 2022. Enrolments increased by 496.0%.

Market highlights

  • January 2023 commencements were higher than in January 2019 (+162).
  • Commencements from Colombia increased by 992.2% or 2,302 additional students, and commencements from Brazil increased by 1062.6% or 1,222 additional students. 
  • There was an increase of 2,276.2% in commencements from Spain for the month of January, as well as a 1,176.2% increase in commencements from Bhutan for the same period.
  • Commencements from Turkey are also still increasing, with a 343.1% year-on-year increase, as are commencements from Vietnam, with a 262.7% increase.
  • Commencements from China increased by 72.7% or 415 additional students versus YTD January 2022. Chinese students made up 8.6% of commencements within ELICOS.    
  • YTD January commencements increased by 76.2% across all sectors. Enrolments increased by 20.8%.
  • The VET sector experienced an increase in commencements at 40.3% or 8,082 additional students when compared to YTD January 2022.    
  • The Non-award sector experienced an increase in commencements at 103.7% or 1,071 additional students versus YTD January 2022.  


Visa trends:

ELICOS only grants up by 269.4% 

The Independent ELICOS sector grants were up in January 2023 by 269.4%, compared with January 2022, with 3,583 more grants.

Offshore grants for Independent ELICOS were up by 237.18% in January 2023, with 3,024 more grants, compared to January 2022. Onshore grants for Independent ELICOS were over ten times higher, with 559 more grants.

ELICOS only visas granted to citizens from Colombia were almost 6.5 times higher for January 2023 compared to January 2022, with 1,415 more grants. Brazil was over 6.7 times higher with 802 more grants, while grants to citizens from Chile were up by 93.16% or 109 more grants. Visas granted to ELICOS students from Japan were over 4.5 times higher and were 87.88% higher for Spanish citizens for the same comparison period.

ELICOS only lodgements up by 113.2%

The total number of Independent ELICOS visa applications lodged for January 2023 was 113.2% higher than in January 2022, with 5,087 total lodgements.
