The Mentorship Program aims to support new Academic Managers and it pairs less experienced managers with more experienced managers to facilitate the sharing of knowledge across the English Australia network. During the program, mentors and mentees meet virtually four times between March and September. In addition, mentors and mentees attend three virtual workshops throughout the program. You can read more about the program aims, expectations and timeframe by reading the Mentorship Program Guidelines below.
“As an experienced teacher, it was a wonderful opportunity to gain insight into the role of an ELT manager and explore whether this is a path to pursue professionally in future.”
“Considering my mentee’s perspectives and questions, and sharing familiar experiences frankly with a peer was a privilege.”
“My mentor taught me the power of questioning without realising it. Her probing questions helped me to answer my own questions and helped me reflect on the way I was managing certain challenging situations.”
The AMSIG Mentorship program aims to:
The role of a mentor is to provide guidance to the mentee through conversation and exploratory questioning. The mentor aims to support the mentee to achieve their individual goals by positive coaching and encouragement.

Discussions and information shared by the mentor and mentee should remain confidential to encourage open and supportive communication without fear of repercussions.
The relationship between mentor and mentee is based on mutual trust and respect.
To promote a productive experience, clear expectations should be established to minimise misunderstandings and align goals. This may include discussing when and how often to meet and goals for participating in the mentorship program. By taking part in the Mentorship Program, there is an expectation that mentors and mentees will meet for at least one hour at least 4 times during the period of the program.
To maintain motivation and provide positive reinforcement, look for successes that can be celebrated as you develop as a team.
