AMSIG Academic Managers' Mentorship Program

The Mentorship Program aims to support new Academic Managers and it pairs less experienced managers with more experienced managers to facilitate the sharing of knowledge across the English Australia network. During the program, mentors and mentees meet virtually four times between March and September. In addition, mentors and mentees attend three virtual workshops throughout the program. You can read more about the program aims, expectations and timeframe by reading the Mentorship Program Guidelines below.

“As an experienced teacher, it was a wonderful opportunity to gain insight into the role of an ELT manager and explore whether this is a path to pursue professionally in future.”

“Considering my mentee’s perspectives and questions, and sharing familiar experiences frankly with a peer was a privilege.”

“My mentor taught me the power of questioning without realising it. Her probing questions helped me to answer my own questions and helped me reflect on the way I was managing certain challenging situations.”

Aims of the Mentorship Program

The AMSIG Mentorship program aims to:

  • Develop and enhance practical leadership skills that can be applied in real-life situations common to our field of practice.
  • Support emerging leaders through sharing of knowledge and experience within the context of Language Teaching Organisations.
  • Explore alternative perspectives in decision making and problem solving.
  • Enhance the supportive and collaborative community within the ELICOS industry.

2. Trust & respect

The relationship between mentor and mentee is based on mutual trust and respect.

3. Clear expectations & goals

To promote a productive experience, clear expectations should be established to minimise misunderstandings and align goals. This may include discussing when and how often to meet and goals for participating in the mentorship program. By taking part in the Mentorship Program, there is an expectation that mentors and mentees will meet for at least one hour at least 4 times during the period of the program.
