English Australia CPD Framework

The English Australia Continuing Professional Development Framework (CPD Framework) is a professional development tool to support ELICOS teachers with their career development.

Assess and monitor your teaching development and address your individual continuing professional development needs with the CPD Framework.

Framework Areas and Phases of Competency

There are nine key areas of English language teaching practice (dimensions) included in the CPD Framework. The areas are generic and are applicable to a range of teaching and learning contexts as defined by students, programs, and institutions.

Each teaching area has four broad phases of teaching competency: Foundation, Developing, Accomplished and Lead. Each area and phase includes a description of the key competencies for effective teaching at that stage. You can read more about the phases of competency on the overview document in the button below.

CPD Framework Resources

If you work for an English Australia member college, you can access a teaching self-assessment quiz and short courses aligned to our CPD Framework via the English Australia CPD Portal, powered by OpenLearning.
In the English Australia online CPD Portal, all of our short courses are aligned to the CPD Framework. By signing up for the CPD Portal, you can:

  • Identify your competency in different areas of your teaching development by taking our self-assessment quiz
  • Take short courses aligned to your development phases and needs for the different teaching areas on the CPD Framework
  • Keep a record of all of your CPD activities, certificates and CPD points that you can share with anyone you wish
  • Collaborate with the English Australia teaching community by sharing ideas and content

English Australia members can find out more about the CPD portal and register for the portal by clicking on the button below.

CPD Points

In the English Australia CPD Framework system, PD activities are assigned CPD points per hour of the activity. They are also weighted based on the type of activity and whether it is passive or interactive learning, or a leadership-type activity. This gives greater recognition of teachers taking a more active role in their professional development.

The CPD weighted points allow teachers to ‘calculate’ their professional development engagement over a period of time and are a measurable, quantitative value recognised within the ELICOS sector.

Type of Learning Points for 1h of Activity Example Activity Points Earned

English Australia PEAL Competency Framework

The English Australia Post-Entry English and Academic Language Special Interest Group (PEAL SIG) has developed a Competency Framework for PEAL practitioners. The Framework has been designed to extend the original English Australia CPD Framework. The competencies outlined in the original Framework equally apply to PEAL educators, who are assumed to be Accomplished or Lead in most of its dimensions.

Thus, the English Australia PEAL Competency Framework outlines additional competencies that are:

  • Relevant to PEAL
  • Not encapsulated by the original CPD Framework.

The PEAL Competency Framework includes three documents, which can be viewed below. They are 1) the competencies 2) the Framework overview and 3) the Framework glossary.
